Casa Batida Fishing Club – Cayo Santa Maria, Cuba
The Hotel Sol Melia is now the primary base of the Casa Batida Fishing Club, an operation previously located at Cayo Largo on Cuba’s southern coast. Tarpon (large and plentiful ones) are the primary quarry, but there is also excellent sport for bonefish, permit, barracuda and jacks. The option to combine this programme with a stay at the 5-star Sol Melia Hotel makes this another of Cuba’s family-friendly fishing holiday destinations.
The fishing
The flats, mangroves and channels around Cayo Santa Maria are an incredible place to fish. This fishery has developed a reputation as a word-class tarpon destination, but that’s not to overlook the action available from bonefish and permit, not to mention jacks, cudas, snapper and plenty more besides. As such, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got more than one outfit rigged and ready to go.
Fishing is a mixture of wading hard-bottomed flats and traditional casting from the skiff, but each day should see you encounter a variety of different challenges.
Lodging & facilities
If you book a fishing holiday at Casa Batida, you will be offered a range of accommodation options, but most opt to stay at the Hotel Sol Melia, an all-inclusive resort with 358 rooms, swimming pools, spa facilities and a range of dining options. It’s an excellent alternative to the floating hotels found elsewhere in Cuba and your family (should you be travelling with them) will thank you for choosing a well-appointed destination.
