Family-run fishing lodge in Punta Allen on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Catering to eight anglers at a time, this place prides itself on top-notch service, comfy accommodation, gourmet food (thanks to chef and co-owner Lupita) and a fishing program headed up by local guides, the Camaal brothers, who bring 60 years’ combined experience to the operation.

The fishing

Together, the Camaal brothers have guided fly anglers to over 2,000 permit and over 1,000 grand slams.

With hundreds of square miles of flats and little fishing pressure, Ascension Bay has become one of the world’s finest destinations for permit fishing. In the back of the bay, schools of 30 to 50 permit are the norm with the school fish averaging 8-12lbs. On the Bay front flats, single fish in the 20-35lb bracket prowl the pristine turtle grass flats.

Huge schools of bonefish also call Ascension Bay home, while the mangrove creeks and lagoons that ring Ascension Bay are home to a healthy year-round population of tarpon to 60lbs and snook to 40lbs.

Fishing is done from 23’ super pangas, with two guides in every skiff, giving you an extra pair of eyes and hands while out on the water. All skiffs use water proof UHF radios (that get updates on weather and communicate with home base, so guides can communicate when separated during wade fishing) and have first aid kits on board. As a bonus you have Captain Greg Rahe, Florida Keys fly fishing guide of 18 years and certified Jedi fly-caster, on hand to help saltwater first-timers, or expand the experienced caster’s horizon.

The facilities

The traditionally decorated Grand Slam rooms are fitted for comfort with air conditioning, ceiling fans, tiled floors, locally made furniture, fly tying table, two queen beds, a full library of favorite fishing and nature books, internet service, rod racks, and private full bathroom with hot water and high water pressure.

Chef Lupita is Club Grand Slam’s head chef, and her food is legendary. All food is prepared using locally sourced fresh produce. Hearty breakfasts including freshly squeezed juices, crepes and Huevos Lupita (scrambled eggs with smoked Mexican sausage) are served before you head to fish, while lunch is on the boat with a cooler of varied sandwiches and side dishes.

Club Grand Slam dinners are served alfresco in the garden, weather permitting. Lobster is available in season.

Where do i start….my wife and I are avid travellers and fisho’s and always try and incorporate a fishing trip in amongst a holiday. After plenty of research our information continually led us to Club Grand Slam. Hospitality is probably not the right word for this place, its more like family. Capt. Greg and Lupita were simply outstanding with Lupita’s amazing local cooking (Im talkin entree, main and dessert!!), and breakfast that was ready and waiting the moment our room doors opened! We were with 2 Canadian fly fisherman as well and shared many Dos Equis and red wine over fishing stories. Now the fishing, its what we are really there for right? Let me say, i have never seen so many bonefish at every flat, every corner and willing to dominate any artificial! We were only there for 2 days fishing and at the end of day the bonefish tally was 40+! Snook…they were loaded in certain spots and big!!! We are from Australia and snook were similar to our barramundi so we loved chasing them! Im relatively new to fly fishing and the guides Benito and Danny were soo patient with us, i learnt more in 2 days than Id ever imagined. My wife has never even seen a fly rod and the boys managed to hook Alicia up to a bonefish. They did everything in their power to put us onto fish, the more enthusiastic you were, the more they bounced off you. We took 2 spin combos in case we were absolute rubbish at fly fishing and were kept busy with nearly a fish a cast and the boys didnt mind. The people are amazing, the hospitality 11/10 and location is a must see…. Thank you Club Grand Slam, we WILL be back….
