Possibly the best known of the Avalon fleet in Jardines de la Reina, La Tortuga is a steel houseboat with seven guest cabins accommodating two anglers each. Permanently moored in a small, protected channel, it offers all the home comforts that have become synonymous with the Avalon operation, along with instant access to one of the world’s finest mixed fisheries. This is the Cuban fishing holiday at its finest.

The fishing

Cuba’s unique position as a land mostly untouched by outside influence has given rise to one major blessing – the island’s fisheries have remained similarly free from the rigours associated with commercial pressure. The Jardines de la Reina archipelago is a shining example of that – a pristine, unspoilt fishery filled with bonefish, permit, tarpon, jacks, barracuda, sharks, snapper and snook. This is a special place to fish, and they have the guides to match. According Avalon themselves, “The guides enjoy enthusiastic anglers and love to work long days, allowing you to fish as hard as you want.

“In contrast to other destinations where you are often limited to six or eight hours on the water, in Avalon’s destinations there is never any limitation on gas used or distances run in the day. But the fishing is normally so good and so intense that you’ll be ready to quit in time to be back for cocktails.”

All fishing Avalon destinations are equipped with Dolphin 16’ Super Skiff Pros, complete with removable aluminium leaning post.

The facilities

Refurbished in 2008, La Tortuga is perfectly constructed to cater to fishermen’s needs.

It features seven guest cabins, all with their own bathroom and easily-adjustable air-conditioning system. On the lower deck is the dining room (also air-conditioned) along with expansive deck areas perfect for setting up tackle or relaxing after fishing. Appetizers and drinks are served daily on the foredeck when you return from fishing.

Generator-supplied electricity is available 24 hours a day, there’s a satellite wireless connection and laptops can be using the Avalon Hot Spot network. In the on-board shop, you can buy fly-fishing shirts (long and short sleeve), T-shirts, hats, shorts and fishing pants.
