Fishing in Honduras

When you talk about flats fishing in Central America and the Caribbean, destinations such as Mexico, Belize, Cuba, Los Roques and the Bahamas inevitably come to mind; Honduras hasn’t traditionally been somewhere that gets a look-in. However, thanks in particular to the superb fishing in the Islas de la Bahia (the Bay Islands), it wasn’t going to remain a secret forever. This chain of three islands (Roatan, Guanaja and Utila) at the southern tip of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is beginning to carve itself out a reputation as a Grade-A flats fishery, with excellent numbers of permit, tarpon and bonefish present. This corner of the Caribbean is not easy to reach, but that’s part of the appeal; its remote location keeps it free from the development you see elsewhere along this coast. Suitable for both fishermen and non-fishermen, the Bay Islands of Honduras are perfect for those in search of a cheaper alternative to other, more conventional flats fishing destinations, as well as being superb for DIY bonefishing. Bonefishing in particular is solid year round, with October-May reckoned to be the more productive months. For permit, peak season is February-July and tarpon sport tops out from October-January. See below for the best Honduras fishing lodges, guides and charters, or browse the map to find your desired location…
