Run by Deneki Outdoors (the folks behind the renowned lodges Andros South and BC West), Alaska West is operated with the same comfortable-but-casual ethos as all their properties. Situated on the Kanektok River, the lodge’s fishing highlights take in all five species of Pacific salmon, along with rainbow trout, dolly varden and grayling.

The fishing

The season at Alaska West runs from June until the end of August. It’s short, but extremely sweet; salmon fishing reaches its peak between mid-June and mid-July, rainbow trout sport picks up from July onwards, and silver salmon are most abundant in August and September. A salmon grand slam (king, silver, chum, sockeye and pink all on the fly in one day), is a realistic possibility. Given the lodge’s location just a few miles from the sea, the fish here are brightly coloured and always battle-ready.

Much of the fishing is done from 16’ jet boats, frequently with two-handed rods. Don’t worry if you haven’t got all the right tackle – the lodge has plenty of loaner gear and flies are provided free of charge. All levels of ability are welcome.

Lodging & facilities

The folks at Alaska West take pride in focusing their energy where it really matters; on top-level service, the highest quality fishing, great food and fun. It’s not a luxury lodge and nor does it aspire to be – accommodation is comfortable and the atmosphere is laid back. As the folks at the lodge say: “You won’t need a coat and tie to wear to dinner, and you won’t have to worry about tracking mud on the carpet.  No one will be offended by your cigar smoke or your drink spilled laughing around the campfire.  You will catch fish till your arms are sore and your back aches.”

7 nights/6 days: between $5250 and $5650 per person (depending on dates)
