Coach Duff’s Hawaiian Bonefishing – Kailua, Oahu
The fishing
If you check out Coach Duff’s website, you’ll see he’s honest and forthright about Hawaiian bonefishing and what visiting anglers can expect.
To sum things up: the bonefish are very big, but catching them is no walk in the park. The flats here are deeper than most bonefishermen will be used to, the weather is notoriously difficult (you can expect strong winds on a regular basis), the fish are hard to see and they simply are not present in the numbers that one finds in, say, Mexico or the Bahamas. They make up for it with their size. Coach Duff says they catch smaller fish on occasion, but the norm is fish of 6lbs and up, with double-digit fish making regular appearances – somewhere between 10 and 20 shots would be considered a good day, so it’s imperative that you bring your A game to the casting deck.
Other fish you might encounter (albeit more rarely) are milkfish, ladyfish and trevally (both GTs and bluefin). Coach Duff can also arrange accommodation in Oahu, with a range options suited to all budgets. All lodging is in the Lanikai Beach area.
