The fishing

Years of experience fishing these waters have put Salty Dog at the top of the stack of Guinea-Bissau fishing tour operators. Working with experienced, knowledgeable and reliable local skippers, in some of the most productive waters of the Bijagos Archipelago, you can expect drag-melting action from the off. Record-sized tarpon are one of the big draws – they’re hard to catch, though, with the majority of them falling to livebait. There’s always the outside chance of one on the fly.

Elsewhere, you can expect to encounter monster-sized jacks, which congregate in huge schools around the wrecks and reefs, along with leerfish, cobia, snapper, some of the biggest chevron barracuda you’re ever likely to encounter, African pompano, cassava, cob, bonefish, permit and grouper. The action (a mixture of popper fishing, fly, vertical jigging, trolling, bait and live baiting) is typically fast and frenetic, and requires the sturdiest of tackle. The fish here will happily make mincemeat of your gear if it’s not up to the task – one sight of a school of jacks exploding on a surface popper and you’ll know exactly what we mean.

Much of the fishing is done from boats, but there’s always a couple of days set aside for shore fishing, where you could run into anything from barracuda, large needlefish and snapper to African sierra and corvina.

Lodging & facilities

The Orango Parque Hotel is situated on Orango Island, at the outer edge of the archipelago. The property provides easy access to both the exceptional fishing and the local wildlife (including rare saltwater hippos, manatees, crocodiles and a stunning variety of migratory birds).

Trips are based on two anglers sharing a modest and comfortable twin-bed chalet, with private ensuite bathrooms and simple showers. Rooms have 220-240V (European twin plug outlet) powered by generator that is switched off around midnight.

The food is excellent with fresh local produce served in a lovely thatched bar-restaurant area, nestled under the trees with views of the Bijagos Archipelago.
