The fishing

The waters off Cabo are sometimes referred to as “the world’s greatest fish trap”. No wonder when you look at the potential targets – roosterfish, striped marlin, black marlin, blue marlin, wahoo, Spanish mackerel, skipjack & yellowfin tuna, cubera snapper, jack cravelle… the list goes on and on.

One of the most popular species among visiting anglers is the roosterfish – Baja Anglers have perfected a system of fishing for these brutes by trolling a hookless “cabillito”, bringing it to the boat when a hunting rooster appears and teasing it into the strike zone, ready for you to cast a fly into its path. Beach-fishing trips for roosterfish are also available – either locally or on the East Cape.

Striped marlin are also a big draw – these are frequently targeted using a similar technique, with hookless teasers used to draw the fish to the boat.

Elsewhere you can expect sport from dorado (huge numbers of them), hard-fighting jack crevalle, snaggletoothed cubera snappers and pack-hunting experts, sierra mackerel.

If you can plan sufficiently far ahead, one of Grant’s roosterfish safaris is definitely worth considering – a week of fun, chasing roosterfish all over the East Cape form La Paz to San Jose Del Cabo. Staying in an inexpensive hotel in Los Barilles, fishing north or south depending on the bite and fishing conditions, this is a chance to learn everything there is to know about beach fishing – casting, stalking, retrieving, fly-tying, leader-making, the lot. Be warned – these trips usually get booked up a year in advance.
