Just south of the town of Vilanculos, in Mozambique’s stunning Bazaruto archipelago, sits Linene Island Resort. With transfers to the lodge only available by boat, this is a remote destination for the dedicated angler, with suitably untouched fishing. Light-tackle estuary fishing, popping for GTs in the surf and offshore action are all on the menu.

The fishing

If you’ve seen the TV show ‘Wild Fisherman’, you’ll have an idea just how good the fishing at Linene is. Its remote location means that, for those who make the trip, some astounding fishing awaits – the offshore reefs remain largely untouched and are home to excellent numbers of fish. Trolling (with lures or livebait) and vertical jigging all produce the goods. GTs are what most people are looking for, but you can reasonably expect to bump into amberjacks, sailfish, king mackerel, queen mackerel, wahoo, dorado and the odd marlin.
On top of that, Linene is renowned for the quality of its estuary and shore fishing. The lodge’s proximity to deep water and strong currents that wash huge numbers of bait fish in with the flooding tide means predators are never far away. King mackerel chase these fish surprisingly close to the shore, along with plenty of species of jacks (they call them kingfish round here), queenfish, sharks and rays. Casting poppers into the surf for GTs is a particular speciality. Whatever the time of day, whatever the tide, there’s fishing to be done at Linene.

The facilities

Five wooden chalets (four three-beds and one four-bed) accommodate anglers at Linene. All have views of the beach and estuary. The staff at the lodge (a mix of South Africans and Mozambicans) are welcoming, professional and renowned for their friendliness.
Note that Linene Island does fall within the malaria risk zone, so appropriate precautions should be taken.
