The fishing

Rio Azul might not be exclusively a fishing lodge, but its fishing programme is right up there with the best in Mozambique. One of the great things about staying here is that every room is supplied with a complimentary estuary boat; guests are given instruction in how to use them, or can hire a skipper if they wish. The estuary is a good place to target grunter, kingfish, barracuda and rock cod, with trolling tactics working well.

The surf fishing is also top class: kingfish, queenfish, king mackerel, springer and barracuda all hunt close in, with sharks and rays also in abundance. It doesn’t end there though. The list of potential species is long and illustrious: pompano, spotted grunter, bonefish, stumpnose, rockcod and various species of snapper. Lure, fly and live bait tactics are all popular.

Rio Azul also has a selection 31’ cats for deep-sea fishing. The nearest reef is roughly a 10-minute ride from the lodge.

The facilities

Accommodation comprises six twin chalets (all with two single beds, plus a roll-out bed for children) two three-bedroom villas (six adults) – beds may be double or single + loft room (six children).

In addition to the fishing, activities on offer include kayaking, bird watching, boating and snorkelling. Further facilities include a lounge, dining room, and a bar area with a wooden deck, a plunge pool and spectacular views over the bay.

Also on site is a small shop selling items such as batteries, sun screen, clothing, sunglasses and fishing tackle. Electricity is supplied by a generator.
