Ragged Edge Resort & Marina – Islamorada, Florida
Located at Mile Marker 86.5 on Route 1, Ragged Edge Resort is one of Islamorada’s favourite destinations for visiting fishermen. The atmosphere is casual and friendly, and there are a range of affordable accommodations to choose from. Fishing charters can easily be arranged and guests are welcome to fish from the pier and on the adjoining flats.
The fishing
They don’t call Islamorada the sportfishing capital of the world for nothing – from its three marinas (Bud n Mary’s, Whale Harbor and Holiday Isle) you’ll have access to roughly 100 offshore sportfishing charters, covering deep-sea fishing in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic for species such as sailfish, marlin, dolphin, wahoo, kingfish, yellowtail, tuna, grouper and many more.
Of course, Islamorada is equally famous for its backcountry and flats fishing. Bonefish sport is strong year-round (the waters here are home to some of the world’s largest specimens), with tarpon particularly abundant during the spring/summer migration.
Deeper in the backcountry, about a 45-minute run from La Jolla, is Flamingo, the headquarters for Everglades National Park. The waters surrounding Flamingo represent some of the most productive fishing grounds in Florida, and if you’re looking for the archetypal redfish/snook hunt in the backcountry, this is the place to do it.
Inshore, offshore and backcountry fishing charters can all be arranged.
