Not specifically a bonefishing lodge, Kamalame Cay is a classic ‘barefoot chic’ resort sitting towards the north end of Andros Island, with a range of 19 upscale beachfront rooms and suites, and prime bonefishing on its doorstep. With a reputation for excellence, a stunning location and plenty going on besides the fishing, this is a perennial favourite for people travelling with non-fishing spouses.

The fishing

This is Andros Island, so you know the fishing at Kamalame Cay is red-hot – specifically fly-fishing for bonefish. The fishery here is vast, and is home to huge numbers of bonefish.

Kamalame prides itself on being able to offer two distinct fisheries. There is abundant water with excellent bonefishing right on the backside of the Cay as well as in the nearby creeks and flats stretching all the way to Majestic Point.  Then there are the nearby Joulter Cays to the north (a short drive away), with their seemingly endless wadable flats and large schools of tailing bonefish.

Seasoned guides at Kamalame use Maverick flats skiffs (the resort has three skiffs of its own) and full or half-day guided trips are available (full-day only for The Joulters).

Guests are also free to wade on their own on Davis Creek’s sweeping flat just a short distance from the villas. Offshore and reef fishing can also be organised.

The facilities

There are 19 luxurious beachfront rooms and suites. The Great Room is furnished with art, books, antiques and a collection of South Asian and Bahamian decor.

A white sand path off the garden terrace leads to a heated, freshwater pool and tiki bar. Other activities at Kamalame include tennis, diving, eco tours and kayaking – and every cottage gets its own golf cart for getting around. The on-site overwater spa provides a range of treatments.
