Islas Secas – Gulf of Chiriqui, Panama
A remote and stunning destination likely to wow even the most widely-travelled fisherman, Islas Secas Resort sits on one of the 16 uninhabited, jungle-clad volcanic islands in Panama’s Las Secas archipelago. With just seven casitas to ensure a feeling of privacy, this lodge is bathed by the Eastern Pacific and surrounded by some of the most incredible inshore and offshore fishing.
The fishing
The lodge’s location in the Gulf of Chiriqui puts it at the heart of nutrient-rich, predator-packed waters – whatever your particular fishing poison, the crew at Islas Secas can serve it up. Take the offshore fishing for example: sitting just 25 miles from the world famous Hannibal Bank, and with Isla Montuosa, Islas Ladrones and Coiba nearby, this is prime deep-sea fishing territory. Employing a multi-species, multi-tackle approach, black marlin, blue marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, dorado and wahoo are all on the menu. All fishing is done from two 34’ SeaVee’s with twin 300hp Suzuki motors, or the Custom 58′ Donzi Sportfish. All three are equipped with the finest tackle.
The inshore fishing meanwhile is just as hot, with hundreds of miles of shoreline and many near-shore rocks that offer some of the finest popper and jig fishing. Roosterfish, cubera snapper, bluefin trevally, grouper, jacks and mackerel all lie in wait.
For fly-fishing enthusiasts, the crews here are experts in the field.
The facilities
To ensure privacy, accommodation is limited to seven Casitas and there are usually no more than 14 guests on the islands with an equal number of staff members. Manicured coral pathways connect the casitas to the Terraza, dining area and bar, located at the head of a protected bay, with views over the beach, ocean and several smaller islands.
This is also a great place to escape from it all as none of the accommodation has a telephone, television or radio (high-speed wireless internet is available in the Terazza).
All casitas feature queen-size beds, hot water showers, fans, mini-bar and private ocean front or ocean views. Each one is powered by its own solar array and battery system providing 12 volt and 110 voltage power.
Should you need any extra relaxation therapy, there’s a spa on site as well.
Rates
7 nights/6 days fishing $7,000 (4 per boat) rising to $17,000 (1 per boat)

Hard to describe what a special place Islas Secas is. The billfishing is off the charts, but for me most fun was inshore fishing for rooster and cubera. Ouch those things are tough!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 As for lodge itself? Perfection, we loved everything about it, including the people. Already thinking about how to get back there…
