Small, privately-owned and operated resort 2km north of Xcalak, near Mexico’s border with Belize. Sits on legendary Chetumal Bay, a fly-fishing hotspot famous for its excellent numbers of bonefish and permit. Not specifically a fishing lodge, but with competitive rates, a beautiful and secluded location, and some excellent DIY options, this is a great choice for fishermen travelling with family.
The fishing
Xcalak has been a mecca for fly-fishermen for years. Its location on Chetumal Bay is the key, putting anglers within reach of some of the best grand-slam opportunities anywhere on the planet – bonefish, tarpon and permit abound here, as do jacks, snook, barracuda and plenty else besides.
Fly-fishing and sightseeing trips can be arranged by Tierra Maya staff either prior to your stay or when you arrive – the hotel works with some of the finest fishing guides in Xcalak.
Alternatively, ocean kayaks and bicycles are offered for your use at no additional charge, meaning you can go for a spot of DIY fishing instead if you’d rather.
The facilities
Hotel Tierra Maya aims to combine luxury with casual beachfront living.
There are six spacious and tastefully decorated oceanfront suites each with their own beachfront, balcony, overlooking the Caribbean. All guest suites have 24-hour electricity, ceiling fans, purified drinking water, refrigerators in three of the six oceanfront suites and full kitchens in the Lux Apartment and the Off-the-Beach Studio Apartment. All accommodation includes daily housekeeping service.
In addition to fishing, the following activities are available: snorkeling, birdwatching, boat excursions to San Pedro (Belize), and scuba lessons at nearby XTC Dive Center.
