A great alternative to the conventional lodge set-up, Three Amigos Fly-Fishing run flats fishing trips to both Belize and the Bay Islands of Honduras aboard their mothership, The Host. That means new flats every day, unpressured waters and a true away-from-it-all feel. Comfy and spacious, The Host can accommodate up to 8 anglers.

The fishing

There are two options available to guests of Three Amigos Fly-Fishing. You can fly into Roatan and fish the near-virgin waters of Honduras’ Bay Islands (Roatan, Guanaja and Utila) or fly into Placencia and head for the remote cayes of Belize. Either way you’ll be fishing remote, unpressured flats, casting to fish that may well never have seen a fly before.

Permit, bonefish, tarpon and snook are all present, and you might also run into cobia, tuna, dorado and wahoo depending on the season. This is a great place to come if you’re still in search of that elusive first permit on the fly.

Anglers fish two per boat, and there are plenty of opportunities to get out and wade for tailing fish. Small flies (gotchas, puffs and charlies for bonefish and small crab patterns for permit) are the order of the day and weed guards are crucial (much of the ground here is rocky and dotted with pieces of fragmented coral). For the same reason, don’t be tempted to scale back your tippet too much – 15lb is standard here. Sturdy wading boots are advised.

Lodging & facilities

Robust, comfy and (crucially) spacious, The Host is an ideal home-from-home for your week on the flats. Numbers are restricted to 8 anglers at a time to ensure maximum comfort.

At just over 50-feet long, the boat has plenty of outside decks to relax on, an air-conditioned dining room and bar, with jungle hardwood throughout.

Staying on a mothership means you won’t have far to travel at the end of each fishing session. So you can have a last cast, head back and be sipping an après-fishing cocktail within minutes. And if you want to carry on fishing after that, providing it’s still light, that can be arranged.

All trips (7 nights with 6 days fishing) are all-inclusive, meaning you can just arrive and fish without having to worry about last-minute add-ons. The only extra is the customary tips for your guides and staff. On board there’s a small tackle shop selling flies, leaders, tippets, hat and shirts.
