Garbutt’s Lodge – Punta Gorda, Belize
Most people who know a thing or two about fly-fishing in Belize have heard of the Garbutt brothers – Scully, Oliver and Eworth – the legendary fly-fishing guides of Punta Gorda. After 15 years of working for lodges in the area, they opened this dedicated lodge in southern Belize – a dream destination for the serious fisherman and a must for the permit aficionado.
The fishing
Rightly acknowledged as some of the best fishing guides in the business, the Garbutt brothers have built their reputation through hard work and consistently solid results. If you’re looking to land a permit on the fly, this has to rate as one of the world’s best destinations, with excellent numbers of fish. Additionally there are plenty of tarpon and bonefish (a grand slam is always possible), and plenty more besides.
Fishing is done from 23’ super-pangas, which are ideal for both poling the flats and running over open water. All boats have poling platforms and are designed for fly-fishing, with spacious casting decks and clean interiors. While loaner rods are available if needed, it is advised that anglers bring their own tackle and equipment.
Lodging & facilities
A truly family-run, fishing-focused operation, this is something of a unique destination. While Scully, Oliver and Eworth see to the fishing, older brother Dennis manages the lodge.
The lodge is located on a small point of land in Punta Gorda, overlooking the Joe Taylor Creek on the back and the beautiful Caribbean Sea to the front. Upstairs in the lodge main building is Grand Slam Bar, serving a combination of fresh seafood dishes and traditional Creole cuisine, all prepared by the Garbutt family.
All cabins features two beds, a private bath, hot showers, air conditioning units, cable TV set, wireless internet, and most of all a well put together deck that hangs over the open sea and another that allows you to overlook the Joe Taylor Creek. The lodge has a maximum capacity of six anglers.
