Desroches Island Fly Fishing Adventures is a comparatively new operation in the Seychelles, lying 140 miles south-west of Mahe. The island combines luxury lodging and all the amenities you would expect at an upscale Seychelles resort with a knockout fishing program that focuses on the remote flats of the St Joseph’s and Poivre Atolls. Resident species include: bonefish, milkfish, Indo-Pacific permit, giant trevally and triggerfish, as well as reef and bluewater species such as marlin, sailfish, tuna, dorado, barracuda, wahoo, jacks, grouper and snapper. The standard of accommodation and alternative activities for non-fishermen makes this a great option for those travelling with wives (or husbands) and partners who don’t fish.

The fishing

Certain species have become synonymous with the Seychelles (milkfish, giant trevally and bonefish being the most famous) and they can all be found here in abundance. The average size of the bonefish is well over 4lbs with many fish between 6 and 8lbs.

Typical itineraries at Desroches Island include seven nights with six days fishing, three of which will be spent fishing the flats of St Joseph’s Atoll (50 minutes by boat), with the remaining days spent on Poivre and South Island (40 minutes by boat).

The Poivre flats offer a mixture of coral, turtle grass and sandy bottom. Principally a bonefish fishery, you’ll also find plenty of milkfish, GTs and Indo-Pacific permit here.

St Joseph’s is slightly larger, and consists of a string of small islands connected by sand flats and turtle grass patches. This fishery is noted for its huge numbers of bonefish (20 fish or more in a day is commonplace), along with excellent chances of permit. Bluewater fishing can also be found nearby.

The guides

With a limit of six anglers per week during the 6-month season (November-May) Desroches Island Fly Fishing Adventures are able to offer a highly personalised service. Guides are experienced, dedicated and armed with a vast knowledge of the local fishery. Fishing is done either wading or from skiffs.
