The fishing

Michael Carroll, Clinton Scavella and Kenny Scavella are the guides for Crooked Island Bonefishing. Their favoured fishing area is in the Bight of Acklins, 15-50 minutes away. Fishing is done mostly from modern flats boats although most of the extensive creeks provide plenty of wading opportunities. Obviously bonefish are the primary target, but occasional shots at permit and tarpon are possible. Both fly-fishing and spin-fishing are effective.

The facilities

As the Crooked folks say: “This is not Nassau or Freeport. There are no golf or tennis resorts, no shopping, no casinos… Crooked Island may be too remote for some, but for those in search of bonefish, beaches, and breath-taking water colours, this is your next vacation location.”

There are three lodging choices:

1) Gibson’s Guesthouse, located minutes from the beach, marina, and restaurant. It has two bedrooms and two bathrooms.

2) Frank and Ruth’s Guesthouse, also located minutes from the beach, marina, and restaurant. It contains six rooms with private baths, and a common room for swapping fish tales after a day on the flats.

3) The Beach Cabins, consisting of four self-contained units on the beach with kitchenettes, and one or two queen beds. The restaurant is a 10-15 minute walk, but pick-up is available. Car rental is also an option.

Meals are served at Gibson’s Restaurant by owner/chef Wilhemina “Willie” Gibson. Fish and shellfish are caught and prepared fresh daily. Self-catering is an alternative for the adventurous. A small store is located in Landrail Point for snacks and sodas.
