In a country blessed with some of the world’s finest billfishing, Casa Vieja Lodge stands proud as one of Guatemala’s premier fishing lodges. Put simply, this place is sailfish heaven, with good numbers of billfish present year round. Top-notch facilities, a home-from-home atmosphere, insanely good fishing and ultra-professional crews are the order of the day.

The fishing

Fishing at Casa Vieja Lodge usually means one thing: sailfish. Sails are taken here year-round (the lodge reckon to average 20 fish raised per day), but during peak season from December to June, that number goes up to between 20 and 40 fish per day.

On one notable day in 2006, fly anglers aboard the Release boated 57 sailfish – rest assured that days with finicky or non-aggressive feeders are few and far between.

Marlin are also present (crews reckon to encounter one every three days) as well as big numbers of tuna and dorado throughout the year.

The facilities

A classically styled sportsman’s retreat surrounded by landscaped gardens, Casa Vieja Lodge has enough room for up to 35 guests. Bedrooms feature either a king-size bed or two queens and bathrooms have step-in showers. On the first floor, you’ll find an air-conditioned restaurant noted for its excellent food along with a well-stocked bar. The pool is an ideal spot to cool off after a hard day on the water.

Casa Vieja is less than a mile from the entrance to Marina Pez Vela, 90 minutes south of Guatemala City, on the Pacific coast of Guatemala. Typically, guests arriving in the capital will be collected after clearing customs and transported via chauffeur-driven vans stocked with beer, sodas and bottled water directly to the lodge. The drive is less than 90 minutes.
