Casa Blanca Lodge – Ascension Bay, Mexico
A jewel at the heart of the Yucatan’s outstanding Ascension Bay fishery, Casa Blanca is a perfect retreat for the saltwater fly-fisherman, sitting on the northern tip of a small and remote island – Isla Punta Pajaros.

The fishing
The lodge is accessible only by a short “puddle-jumper” flight from Cancun, but the extra difficulty getting there ensures that out-of-the-way sensation. It also gives you quick access to some of the world’s finest light-tackle saltwater fishing. Primarily a fly-fishing destination, the waters around Casa Blanca abound with bonefish, barracuda, tarpon, snapper, snook and permit. In fact, if you’re after that elusive first permit on a fly, there are few better destinations – Casa Blanca proudly boasts having caught as many as 56 permit on the fly in one week. Thanks to good tarpon numbers, it’s also a great place to go looking for that grand slam.
The facilities
Eleven spacious and well-appointed rooms (all air-conditioned) look directly out over the Caribbean, there’s a fully-stocked bar specialising in mojitos and the food is famously good. It might be remote, but there’s nothing lacking in the amenities department.
Also worth noting: there’s an on-site fly shop in case you run out/haven’t brought enough of that week’s hottest fly.
