Avalon Fishing Centers have added an eighth destination to their burgeoning Cuban portfolio. As of January 2010, they launched a new operation at South Ana Maria in easternmost corner of the Jardines de la Reina archipelago. Avalon’s newly-refurbished yacht, Caballones, serves this remote spot, catering for groups of six to eight and giving fishermen the opportunity to explore another virgin Cuban fishing ground.

The fishing

This truly is virgin territory, with fishing grounds that have received little to no pressure, and fish that have never seen flies or lures before. Exploratory visits have revealed large numbers of tarpon, bonefish, and permit with plenty of others to keep you interested in between. A rotation scheme is used, so that each Dolphin skiff has as a different assigned daily area to fish and staying on board the Caballones means anglers are positioned at the heart of the fishing grounds, leaving less travelling time to the hotspots in the mornings.

As with all Avalon operations, fishing hours on board Caballones are at the discretion of clients. After breakfast, your guides will be ready to depart for fishing from 7.45 am and you’ll usually be fishing within 15 minutes of leaving the yacht.

The facilities

Caballones comes complete with the same standard of amenities that you would expect at any of Avalon’s destinations. This program is completely independent from the other Avalon trips to Jardines de la Reina, in the sense that anglers will arrive at Jucaro Port, where they will board the yacht, for a transfer to the first fishing area. The program can be booked for four to eight anglers in exclusivity. Those staying aboard the yacht will be in five double rooms, all with air conditioning and private bathrooms. Excellent food and service along with long days on the water in a scarcely explored marine eco system is what this trip is all about.
