Blue Horizon Lodge – Northeast Caye, Belize
This reckons to be the only lodge in the world dedicated to fly-fishing for permit. And with the “permit whisperer” himself at the helm (legendary owner and head guide Lincoln Westby), you couldn’t be in better hands. It’s rustic and remote (18 miles south-east of Dangriga), it only takes six anglers a week, and the permit fishing is as good as it gets. It’s definitely one for the serious and seasoned fly-fisherman.
The fishing
Blue Horizon Lodge is unique, in that it has been designed around the seasoned angler who is serious about catching permit on the fly. Through years of trial and error, Westby and his team have developed and mastered permit-fishing techniques that consistently produce. This fact coupled with the lodge’s geographical location make Blue Horizon Lodge one of the best destinations available to get honest shots at permit on the fly.
Something unique to Blue Horizon’s fishing program, and in contrast to traditional permit fishing, is spotting permit from the skiff, then stealthily slipping into the water and wading to within casting distance for optimal position, before casting to tailing fish.
There are no set fishing schedules at Blue Horizon Lodge; long fishing days are the norm. As Lincoln says: “We fish by the tides, not the cook.”
The lodge uses three panga-type skiffs, complete with casting platforms, each with plenty of horsepower to speed anglers between fishing grounds.
The facilities
Make no mistake, this place is all about the fishing – as such accommodations are comfortable and rustic with a no-frills approach. There are three private cabanas, each with its own shower and bathroom. The food is a combination of traditional Belizean dishes and fresh seafood. Plenty of cold Belikin beer is always available as well as soft drinks and fruit juice.
