The fishing

Staying at this Alaska fishing lodge means you’ll be fishing the Bristol Bay area, 250 miles southwest of Anchorage and best known as a “trophy rainbow trout” area. Crystal clear water and abundant natural resources ensure the fish here grow to huge sizes. June is excellent for rainbow trout (particularly on dry fly), Arctic grayling and northern pike, while king salmon begin to show up later in the month – a short flight will put you in amongst the best spots to target them. The folks at the lodge reckon it’s not uncommon for a guest to land 10 kings in one afternoon. The end of June through July is prime time for sockeye salmon on the Kvichak, with millions passing right in front of the lodge each summer. Silver, chum, and pink salmon arrive around at the beginning of August and through to October, there’s great sport for trophy rainbows.

How you choose to spend your fishing time is completely up to you. These guys operate a “no set schedule” policy and unlimited guided fishing time policy. You discuss the options with the lodge manager in the evening and from there you decide what to do the next day. You might fly out for the day, go on a float trip or to stay and fish the Kvichak. It’s up to you.

The facilities

The Alaska Sportsman’s Lodge consists of a 3,500 square foot solid cedar chalet style main lodge, three duplex cabins for guests, the “Iliamna” guest cabin (which sleeps four guests), and a wood burning sauna. The lodge will accommodate 16 exclusive guests per night and all the cabins have hot and cold running water and 24 hour a day electrical service from our generator plant. The main lodge has a hardwood floored dinning room, living room with fireplace, couches and rockers, bar, fly-tying area tackle/guides room, map room and laundry room. The main lodge is spacious enough for all of the guests to stretch out and relax, yet it is intimate enough to enjoy the camaraderie of fellow guests and guides.
