Video goodness: Awesome underwater sailfish footage

Do you ever worry that, if there is such a thing as reincarnation, you’ll come back as a baitfish? That you’ll be forced to trade places with the lowliest of the marine piscatorial family and run the gauntlet of a terror-stricken life at sea, predators tracking your every move?

If so, you’d do well to look away now. For the rest of us, this is a rare glimpse into the underwater world of the sailfish. This film, shot by freedivers off Cancun in Mexico, has some knockout footage of a whole fleet of feeding sails. Their speed and agility as they slice and dice their prey is astonishing – and the sheer number of them is something to behold.

If you happened to be one of the unfortunates in the baitball, and this gang of sword-wielding brutes appeared from the murky depths, you’d know your number was up. Great work from the guys who filmed this too – the footage has a strange, ethereal, almost cartoon-like quality about it.

You know, just occasionally, it’s good to watch these creatures at work, without the interference of us anglers. As I say, just occasionally….
