The view from Islamorada with Captain Rick Stanczyk

Captain Rick Stanczyk reports from Islamorada, where hot summer action is the order of the day…

We’ve been incredibly busy here in Islamorada, Florida, and fishing has still been pretty good in all aspects.

Tarpon are still the primary focus in the backcountry and while it’s not quite the same as it was in April and May, there are still some decent numbers of fish around.

Upper Keys Fishing Report with Capt. Rick Stanczyk (1 July, 2013)The day trips around the mainland (cape) area and the backcountry channels have been producing some good fish along with sharks and occasionally other big things. Mullet have been tough to find locally, but again in the backcountry they are plentiful. We had some good fishing back there this past week with multiple tarpon, sharks, goliath groupers, and even some summer time cobias.

Around Islamorada the tarpon fishing in the late afternoon/evenings with the falling tides has been good fishing live crabs or dead mullet – we’ve caught fish every day the last week doing this, and the last few night trips produced multiple bites and multiple fish landed.

Upper Keys Fishing Report with Capt. Rick Stanczyk (1 July, 2013)The backcountry fishing for snook has been getting better, but with so many sharks back there it’s a matter of finding a spot with little shark activity. On calmer days the gulf is holding permit and cobia still on the wrecks, though we’ve had some wind and rain the past few weeks so that hasn’t been a good option most days.

Upper Keys Fishing Report with Capt. Rick Stanczyk (1 July, 2013)Plenty of mangrove snappers and trout can be found in the bays if you’re looking for dinner. As we enter July there can be a good push of backcountry tarpon and a lot less pressure on them – the weather is hot though, so getting out early is often a good bet!
