Captain Gregg McKee’s Wildfly Charters specialize in fishing the fertile waters of Pine Island in south-west Florida. Catering to both fly-fishermen and light-tackle spin-fishing aficionados, Gregg supplies top-of-the-line gear and targets redfish, snook, sea trout and tarpon. This is a great opportunity to fish some of Florida’s less-pressured yet hugely productive waters, just 45 minutes from Fort Myers airport.

The fishing

Welcome to Florida’s best-kept secret. All the Gulf Coast species are permanent residents of Pine Island Sound and Matlacha Pass. Redfish, sea trout and snook can be caught year-round on the mangrove shorelines and flats surrounding these islands. Tarpon fishing from the early spring and into the fall is also excellent, with the world-famous Boca Grande Pass just a 15-minute run from the northern tip of Pine Island.

Gregg fishes out of a Beavertail BT3 skiff, perfectly rigged for these waters with their miles of flats and oyster bars. All tackle (for both fly and spin fishing) is provided, including Sage rods and Tibor reels for fly anglers and Shimano gear for spin fishermen. Trips launch from Matlacha Park but Gregg can also meet anglers at several different locations on or around Pine Island. There are dozens of great waterfront hotels, guesthouses, and rental properties in this area and Gregg can advise you on where to stay should you need assistance.

Captain Gregg has been guiding for 15 years, with years of experience in Key West, Vieques (Puerto Rico) and now in Matlacha. When he’s not fishing the waters of West Florida, Gregg finds time to write the excellent Pine Island Angler blog – a treasure trove of info, stories and pictures from his life on the water.
