Paul Petty – Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera, Bahamas
One of the best known and most respected bonefish guides on Eleuthera, Paul specializes in fly-fishing and light-tackle spinning for the grey ghost of the flats (and pretty much anything else that swims in these waters).
The fishing
Paul Petty grew up in Governor’s Harbour and inherited his bonefishing skills from his father (also a guide) Gladstone Petty. Although many flats can be accessed by car along Queen’s Highway, the best flats will of course be the less pressurised ones and Paul will get you there in either his Boston Whaler or Carolina Skiff. Paul likes to wade the flats but when the water is too high, he’s ready with the push-pole. He advises either a 7-weight or 8-weight rod along with Gotcha and Charlie pattern flies and also recommends de-barbing hooks to aid fast and effective catch and release.

Great guide, great island. Extrordinarily personable family man. He’ ll put you onto whatever fish you want.
At first I was not sure about spending the cash to get a guide or just try bonefishing on my own in Eleuthera. Man am I glad I got Paul Petty to take my wife and I out. He was very professional and well mannered, as most everyone I met in Governor’s Harbour. Paul has a nice flats boat and he works hard polling it threw the flats. It was an overcast morning and Paul put us on the bones. After about an hour of searching, we were hooked up and I caught a 4 pounder that took my fly line into the backing. Shortly after that my wife caught one on a spinner rod that Paul rigged up for her. Paul doesn’t stay in one or two spots like some lazy guides I have had in the past. We moved to at least 7 different flats and he put me on 5 or 6 more bones weighing around 5-7 pounds. Unfortunately, I was not that accurate at presenting my fly to them. Practice, practice, practice throwing into a little wind and landing your fly in a target before coming. I have been trout fishing for 10 years now, but bonefishing truly takes accuracy. I plan on seeing Paul again next year. God Bless
