Clayton Lee and Sean Niesz opened Nervous Waters in 1999 – at that time, they reckon, “you could count the fly fishers in Hawaii on your fingers”. Of course, things have changed somewhat, and Nervous Waters have been at the forefront throughout, providing tackle at their store, along with guided bonefishing in the waters off Honolulu.

The fishing

Oahu native Ed Tamai is the head guide at Nervous Waters. As a G. Loomis pro-staffer and all-round expert, Ed’s knowledge of the fish, their habits and habitat is formidable.

Top-of-the-range Loomis tackle is included at no extra charge alongside flies, leaders and transportation. All guided days are walk-in trips.

As with all Hawaiian bonefishing, it’s not easy and you shouldn’t be booking a trip with the expectation that you’ll stack up the numbers. However, when you do find the fish, it’s likely they’ll be bigger than most other bones you’ve encountered. Fish around 6lbs are considered average, with double-digit bruisers not uncommon.
