Mark Bastian – Mangrove Cay, Andros, Bahamas
A well-respected local Andros guide, Mark worked for many of the island’s lodges before setting up his own guiding business a few years ago. He now specialises in fly-fishing in and around Mangrove Cay for bonefish and other flats species.
The fishing
Mark’s skiff is located at Lisbon Creek, but he can pick you up from anywhere on Mangrove Cay. Once you’re out on the water, bonefish are the number one target, along with barracuda, jacks and tarpon (if you head over to the west side). Permit are less abundant in this part of Andros but there’s still an outside chance you’ll spot one. Whatever happens, you’re guaranteed a good day out on the water in a relatively unpressured and unspoilt part of the Bahamas.

Fished two days with Mark in 2010. First day wasn’t so good (not his fault), we just couldn’t get fish to eat, I made some bad casts, just didn’t quite happen. One of those days I guess.
The second day, however, was a different story. Lost count of the fish we caught – all bones in the 3-6lb bracket, and all caught on some of the most beautiful flats I’ve ever fished.
We were staying at the Seascape Inn on Mangrove Cay, and Mickey and Joan (the hosts there) put us in touch with him.
If you’re in the area, Mark’s definitely worth looking up.
Just spent 4 days with Mark on the most amazing flats I have ever seen. He put me on the fish every day with at least 10-15 legitimate shots at good bonefish every day. Most importantly he knows how to cast so he can give helpful advice, he is also excellent at boat position and timing his audibles with the angler’s casting speed/ability. Next time I go to Andros, he’ll be the first person I call to make sure I can book him.
I have fished twice with Mark some years ago while at Tranquility Hill. Mark put me on double digit bonefish , several in the 10-13 lb. range.
He is a fantastic guide and I am glad he is on his own now. I will definitely bood a trip with him this year.
I have fished more than 30 days with Mark over the last 5 years and can say he is one of the best guides I have ever had.
Besides putting me on countless BIG fish and knowing the Bights like his back pocket, he is good company on a boat. He has got the knowledge if Tarpon, Permit and double digits are your quest.
He also has patience and pedagogical skills to insure that my wife got her first bonefish which was very important. He has always been organized and punctual – when you make an arrangement with him you can be sure he will be there.
Mark recently upgraded his Dolphin skiff with a brand new 85HK Yamaha.
His rates are actually $500 for anything under 3 days and 450$/day for anything over.
I will highly recommend Mark to anybody, experienced or beginner!
