Guillaume Vernet – Riom-es-Montagnes, Cantal
Guillaume is one of the Cantal’s premier guides. Working as both a tour guide for the local Office de Tourisme and an independent fishing guide, he operates primarily in the Pays Gentiane region, specialising in fly-fishing and light-tackle lure fishing for trout in the remote mountain streams, as well stillwater predator fishing for pike, zander and perch.

The fishing
With innumerable rivers, streams and lakes, the Cantal region is home to seemingly endless fishing opportunities; long-time Cantal resident Guillaume Vernet has an unrivalled knowledge of the hidden gems and hottest fisheries in this wilderness.
Thanks to Guillaume, the Office de Turisme in Tourisme in Riom-es-Montagnes now has a dedicated welcome area for fishermen (the only one of its kind in the country), where anglers can drop in and get advice on where to fish, pick up leaflets on individual fisheries or even crank out come flies at the fly-tying station. He also offers guided days on the water – whether it’s hiking into the remote valleys of the Pays Gentiane to find wild brown trout, or fishing from from float tubes on one of the area’s stillwaters, Guillaume can make it happen.
With its abundance of wild trout, the area is naturally a hotbed for fly-fishing, but ultra-light lure fishing for trout is also extremely popular in this part of the world and Guillaume is an expert in both disciplines. Anglers are welcome to bring their own gear, but Guillaume can also provide tackle as needed.
His expertise is renowned throughout France; in recent years Guillaume has featured in fishing magazines and on numerous French fishing shows filmed in the Cantal region.
