Based in Islamorada, but covering the area from Miami to Flamingo and south to Marathon, Captain Tim Mahaffey specializes in fly-fishing for bonefish, permit, tarpon, redfish and snook. A charter with Tim is a chance to fish with the only angler in history to win all four Fly “Majors”.

The fishing

Fishing from a 17′ Maverick Mirage flats boat, Captain Tim Mahaffey has built an incredible reputation as a tournament angler and now as a guide. He boasts eight Tournament Wins in the Invitational Fly “Majors” and has won all four at least once (the only angler to have done so). As Tim says, “I am willing to share those experiences with you now, I love to teach.” You could hardly have a better tutor. Many guides in the area typically focus on a specific area, but Tim’s breadth of experience means you can choose from a range of destinations, from Miami and the Everglades right down to Marathon in the Middle Keys.

For those in search of bonefish and permit, the Florida Keys is the place to be. The flats of Downtown Islamorada are famed for their behemoth bones, and Captain Tim’s best tipped the scales at 14lb 8oz. The permit fishing is also superb, and he reckons to hook at least a fish a day.

Fishing in the waters of Miami and the Everglades gives you a chance to target trophy redfish and snook, alongside speckled trout, jacks, ladyfish and sharks. Higher catch rates (compared to flats trips for bonefish and permit) make this a nice alternative to traditional flats outings, and perfect for kids.

All equipment is provided, including G. Loomis fly and spinning rods, Abel fly reels, and Shimano Stella and Stradic spinning reels.

Rates

Full day (8 hours): $600 Half-day (4 hours): $400
