Having been fishing the waters of the Florida Keys since 1981, Captain Bob Jones is rightly considered one of Islamorada’s foremost fishing guides. From his base at Papa Joe’s Marina (across the highway from Bud n’ Mary’s), Bob guides clients around the backcountry and flats of Islamorada in search of bonefish, tarpon, permit and more.

The fishing

Captain Bob covers the waters from Key Largo in the Upper Keys to Marathon in the Middle Keys – an area that is home to some extraordinary flats fishing. The bonefish in particular grow to leviathan proportions, the like of which you rarely see elsewhere. Make no mistake, the fishing can be tough, but there’s always the chance of running into a double-figure specimen.

And then there’s the tarpon and permit fishing. Peak months for tarpon are March-July, with fish regularly topping the 100lb mark. Permit, while present all year, are most abundant from February-October.

Captain Bob’s tackle includes G Loomis fly rods and Tibor Reels, plus Shimano light spinning rods and reels. Novices and experienced anglers are equally welcome.
