The fishing

Alvin can cover the South, Middle and North Bights of Andros with ease. He also frequently fishes the remote West Side of Andros which is a reasonable run from Little Harbour on the north shore of Mangrove Cay where he keeps his boat.

Twenty-fish days, with bonefish averaging 5lb, are not uncommon and big double-figure bonefish are frequently caught, especially when fishing the West Side.

Alvin’s clients often stay at Swain’s Cay Lodge on Mangrove Cay.

I fished with Alvin for a few days last week (mid April) and had the most amazing time. One day we headed to the Western end of the Middle Bight and landed 16 bonefish in the 3-5lb range. I lost a load more to sharks, mangrove roots, snapped leader etc. Often had fish coming at us from all directions, making it tricky to decide which ones to cast to!

Another day we headed out to Cabbage Creek which is on the West side of Andros, North of the North Bight. We left early to make the most of the day so I was fishing by 8am after a run of about 45 minutes. I’d landed my first fish by 8:15am, about 6lb, my second by 8:30, about 7lb and my third by 9am, about 8lb. Totally unbelievable, I’ve never seen anything like it. I missed shots due to bad casts to at least two 10lb+ fish. You can see these fish coming from 200 feet away, big dark torpedos against the white sand. After unsuccessfully poling into the creek with the tide we ventured to a mangrove area and came across a school of 500+ fish, it looked like a trout farm they were so thick. We caught a few out of the school before they moved too far into the mangrove to make hooking them worthwhile. What a day.

Alvin is a calm, fun guy to fish with, doesn’t loose his cool no matter how bad your cast! He works hard to catch fish and quickly moves spot if there aren’t fish around. He positions the boat really well to help ensure the cast is as easy as possible, though sometimes the bonefish don’t cooperate! His boat is a standard flats boat, very clean and tidy and runs well.

I stayed at Swain’s Cay Lodge also featured on fishipedia which I also recommend.

This is a great arrangement that I highly recommend it if you want to catch plenty of big bonefish on a trip to the Bahamas.

    Paul,

Sounds like a dream trip. I’ve fished in the area myself (stayed next door at Mickey and Joan’s Seascape Inn and fished with Mark Bastian) and had a blast too. However, I definitely stack up the kind of numbers you’re talking about here.
Did you have much success wading the flats in front of the lodge? I encountered some absolute hogs there.
Looking forward to getting back there one day…

Yeah I too fished the flat right off Swain’s Cay and saw some really big, oceanic fish with very dark colouring. Didn’t land any though, they are spooky fish! I prefer Swain’s Cay Lodge to Seascape Inn as it’s more of a fishing lodge so you get the beers and fishing chat at the end of the day, everyone comparing notes and their adventures, it’s great fun. I haven’t fished with Mark Bastian but I hear he’s really good. Other good guides are Shine, Marvin Miller and Paterson Bowleg.
