Fishing in Gabon
Gabon is the latest destination to be added to Salty Dog Game Fishing’s roster of top West African fishing destinations. Unexplored waters, upscale accommodation in a wilderness setting, plus a vast array of sportfishing species await the intrepid angler.
The fishing
Gabon’s Loango National Park (one of 13 in the country) is home to a world-class fishery. Here, the warm equatorial waters of the Atlantic Ocean, white beaches, lagoons, tropical forests, savannahs and amazing wetlands come together to create one of Africa’s last great coastal wildernesses. This is a place where you can be fishing the near-shore waters for tarpon while elephants and hippos roam the beaches in front of you.
Cubera snapper, tarpon, African threadfin, jack crevalle, whitefin jacks, barracuda, rouge, Senegal kob, guitar fish and the elusive san crevalle (on fly for the challenger) are just a few of the species you can target while fishing from our boats or on the beach. We actively promote and practice a catch-and-release policy to help protect this African fishing paradise.
It is not only the world-class fishing that makes this destination stand out. You will also be sharing your tropical beach with elephants, hippopotamus (they do like a surf), forest buffalo and lowland gorillas foraging in the beachside trees. Turtles can also be seen during the mating season.
Guided walks through Loango National Park are also available. Here you might see manitees, crocodiles, monitor lizards, red river hogs, forest sitatunga, forest duikers as well as the common bay and yellow-backed duikers, Many rare bird species are also found here, including chocolate-back kingfishers, white-crowned tiger herons, forbes’s plover, Loango weaver and many more.
The facilities
The base for Salty Dog trips will be Loango Lodge, on the Iguéla Lagoon within the Loango National Park. Accommodation comprises seven luxurious, traditionally decorated bungalows, each with private terrace, most with a superb view of the tranquil river and the National Park. Some time will also be spent at the satellite beach fishing camp, situated at Pte. Ste. Cathérine Beach Camp, which is on the doorstep of the Atlantic Ocean, overlooking the Iguéla inlet where the lagoon and Atlantic meet. Staying here gives you access to high-octane fishing with every tidal change.
