Ascension Bay Fishing Report with Captain Greg Rahe

Captain Greg Rahe, guide and owner of Club Grand Slam on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, reports on a mixed month of May…

Mother(nature) May I?

The May weather in Punta Allen and Ascension Bay was bi-polar at best. Two weeks of clear, hot conditions, followed by Noah’s Ark-type rains that threatened to shut down everything, including the roads. The rains finally subsided yesterday, May 31, and we have blue bird conditions and anglers chomping at the bit to get back to true sight casting. Instead of spending all day saying, “I think I see a fish.”

The tarpon assault continued in the green rooms of Lost Man Lagoon and lots of bonefish to 6lbs were landed out front when the skies were clear. A few permit landed and snook seem to be taking a holiday. Got blanked on Grand Slams.

Of our May anglers, I have to single out Nancy. She shows up with her hardcore angler boyfriend and after only 1 ½ hour of casting instruction, starts sticking bonefish to 6lbs and even tangled with a few tarpon to 50lbs. What a trooper. She definitely has the saltwater bug in her system.
