A remote yet well-appointed lodge, lying deep in Venezuela on the Paragua River. Anglers making this trip do so usually with one species in mind – the fang-toothed prehistoric powerhouse that is the payara. There’s also the possibility of hooking up to the occasional aymara. At night, anglers are made comfortable in the upscale jungle lodgings. For the dedicated freshwater angler looking for a new adventure, this is a unique opportunity.

The fishing

Guides will take you either to the Falls themselves or to any number of marks along the Paragua River. You’ll fish from the bank or islands, or from the boat when out in the fast flow of the river. The fishing itself is predominantly for the vicious payara, a long and slender predator which can grow to sizes in excess of 30lbs. The majority of fish fall to trolled subsurface lures (15-25 feet being the optimum depth), though heavy bucktail jigs and sometimes topwater lures can also score. Take a range of lures to be on the safe side. Speaking of safety – be careful how you handle the payara when you do catch one. Those teeth are built to inflict serious damage.

Lodging & facilities

The camp at Uraima Falls is located right on the edge of the river, providing a beautiful and luxurious jungle setting. Accommodations are all in thatched roof huts called churuatas, with each one containing two bedrooms and a private bathroom with hot water shower. Three meals are served daily and appetizers are provided on your return from a day’s fishing.
