Located at the heart of the Bocas del Toro archipelago on Panama’s Caribbean coast, this eco adventure lodge is a gem. A family-run establishment, its six cabanas and main lodge have been lovingly and carefully built into 110 acres of lush rainforest. Although not specifically a fishing lodge, Tranquilo Bay have pioneered fishing in this area, and the inshore fishing for tarpon in particular is excellent. This is a great option for the fisherman travelling with family.

The fishing

Utilising two 27’ center console boats and a 25’ panga, a combination of inshore and offshore fishing is offered at Tranquilo Bay. During spring, tarpon, snook and jacks can be found schooling in various bays, lagoons, rivers and small flats within the archipelago. These same fish, along with larger migrants, congregate near river mouths in the spring and fall. Snapper, jacks and barracuda can be found within the archipelago near reefs, grass flats and mangrove estuaries throughout the year. Anglers may also get occasional shots at bonefish, but it would be unwise to plan a trip around encountering them here.

In terms of deep-sea fishing, you could hook up to yellowfin, blackfin and bigeye tuna, along with wahoo and kingfish. Sailfish put in the odd appearance, though this is a rare occurrence and shouldn’t be counted on.

The facilities

All cabanas are air-conditioned and tastefully decorated with local hardwoods, tile floors and fine linens. All come equipped with hammocks, Adirondack chairs and a ceiling fan. Four of them have a breathtaking ocean view while two have a jungle view. Each bathroom includes a walk-in shower with a full-size water heater. Coffee makers, hair dryers and snack baskets are also located within the bathroom.

Meals are served in the main lodge, where an upstairs balcony also provides a great spot to watch the sun rise with your morning coffee or relax in the evening with a cold drink.  The main lodge also includes the bar and entertainment room complete with television, book and video library.
