A family-run guesthouse in a stunning Kerry location on Ireland’s south-west coast, Thatch Cottage specialises in fishing holidays designed around your individual requirements. A unique combination of freshwater fishing for salmon and sea trout alongside saltwater fishing for bass (with guiding provided by owner and renowned local expert John Quinlan) makes this a truly memorable destination. Non-fishing guests are also welcome.
The fishing
As more and more people have switched on to the idea of targeting bass on the fly in European waters, so Ireland’s stock has risen as one of the premier destinations within the field. And County Kerry can lay claim to some of the country’s finest bass fishing full stop. Thanks to Irish conservation laws, the bass is protected, and the fish are plentiful here, with a diverse range of coastal habitats all within a few minutes’ drive of the lodge. Bass are present all year round, but May-October are generally seen as the best months. In addition to bass, there are plenty of pollock, mullet, wrasse and mackerel to keep things interesting.
Also nearby you’ll find excellent freshwater sport for salmon, brown trout and sea trout on the lakes and rivers. Because of the variety of freshwater fishing available, angling pressure is very light (some of the mountain lakes are rarely, if ever, fished, even though they hold a good stock of trout). The fly-fishing season starts on January 17th and ends on September 30th.
The River Inny consistently produces good salmon numbers, with fish running the river from March to September (with the main runs from June to September). Meanwhile, Lough Currane (4 miles from the fishing lodge) is regarded as the finest sea trout lake in the British Isles, and every year produces thousands of fish (along with plenty of salmon).

Comfortable lodgings are provided in the beautiful Thatch Cottage overlooking the Inny Estuary, just minutes from the best bass beaches in the area. You can expect a full Irish breakfast to set you up for the day, and a warm welcome as standard.
