If fly-fishing for tarpon up to 200lbs while staying in a rustic beachfront jungle setting is your bag, then Tarponville is your kind of place. Situated close to the border with Panama, Tarponville’s location away from many of the other Costa Rican tarpon lodges in the north gives it access to near virginal fishing grounds.

The fishing

A normal fishing day will start with breakfast at 6am. You’ll then depart for the fishing grounds by 6:30am (a 20-30 minute run.) Normally you will return by noon for a prepared lunch and return to fish at about 2pm until dark. This schedule allows you to be on the water during the prime fishing hours. The focus is on the silver king and the sport is excellent. The lodge boasts having achieved up to 20 hook-ups in a single morning before. Fish are present here in very large numbers, with tarpon weighing over 130lb having been landed on both lure and fly.  Prime fishing months are March, April, May, September and October.

The facilities

Complete Tarponville fishing packages include accommodations in a clean and comfortable beachfront lodge located just outside the village of Manzanillo. Each room at the lodge has two beds, ceiling fans, a private bathroom and a beachfront view. Guests also have access to the internet (bring your own laptop) and the lodge telephone.

The lodge is located in the middle of the Manzanillo/Gandoca Wildlife Refuge, one of the most beautiful places in the area. Howler monkeys, sloths, birds and other wildlife can all be viewed from your front porch in the mornings and evenings. All meals at the lodge are prepared by local cooks.
