The fishing

Sailfish Bay’s fleet comprises five boats – two 32’ Blackfins (Maverick and Gypsy), the 35’ Viking Sirena, a 36’ Pacemaker (Bavarian), and Cayuco, a 39’ Chris Craft. All crews are expert in the use of fly, light-tackle and conventional gear.

Prime sailfish season runs from October to the end of May, but billfish are caught year round in Guatemala. Sailfish Bay records include 70 releases in one day on conventional gear on March 13, 2006; the same group also released 235 sailfish in three days of fishing aboard Maverick and Gypsy. Sailfish Bay’s fly-fishing record for one day is 22 releases.

Marlin are also present, alongside huge populations of dorado, yellowfin tuna, roosterfish and other inshore species.

The facilities

Sailfish Bay Lodge has eight spacious, beachfront, air-conditioned bedrooms with private baths. There’s an outdoor bar, swimming pool and Jacuzzi overlooking the Pacific, restaurant/dining area, gift shop and office building.

Breakfast consists of fresh fruit, cereal, pancakes and eggs cooked to order, fresh-roasted Guatemalan coffee and freshly squeezed orange or pineapple juice. In the evening, the chef will prepare everything from fresh seafood to traditional chicken, pork and beef dishes. The open bar features several local beers, national liquors and wine. 24-hour security is in operation.

Can’t say enough good things about this place – after a few failed attempts at catching a sailfish I decided to put some money down and really go for it. After a bit of research, I came to the conclusion that Guatemala was the place to do it and Sailfish Bay were the guys to make it happen. Let’s just say I was right – we raised fish every single day of the trip, boated plenty, fished til our arms were sore then went back for more, and more, and more. The crews here are professional with a capital P and really know their stuff. The clue’s in the name folks – if you’ve got a thing for sails, get down there and get hoked up!
