The fishing

Its location at the heart of the Everglades gives this place instant access to some of the finest backcountry light-tackle and fly-fishing to be found anywhere in the world. Tarpon, redfish, snook, trout, sharks, and plenty more abound in this thriving ecosystem. Bring your own boat, canoe or kayak if you have one, or rent them here if you don’t. Alternatively you can hire one of the excellent local guides to take you out for the day. Whichever way you do it, you’ll find the fish are never too far away.

The facilities

Since 1972 the club has been in the hands of the Bowen family, who have continued its proud tradition of excellent service in a unique setting. This place drips with a traditional fishing lodge atmosphere – from the dark brown wood of the dining room and mounted grouper and tarpon trophies, to the pillared front porch and casually appointed registration desk. The wicker furniture along the old screened porch is the ideal spot for watching  pelicans perched on the pilings and for checking on the river traffic.

Additional facilities include a cocktail lounge, swimming pool, tennis (across the street), fishing guides (available at the lodge) and dock.

With a reputation as one of the area’s best lodges, it’s little wonder the Rod & Gun Club has previously hosted such illustrious guests as Presidents Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Hoover, and Nixon; actors John Wayne, Burt Reynolds, Sally Field, Sean Connery, Danny Glover, and Joe Pesci; novelist Ernest Hemingway; and musician Mick Jagger.
