On the banks of the Rio Colorado, right at its confluence with the Caribbean, is this well-established and well-appointed lodge. As with most fishing lodges in this part of Costa Rica, the focus is very much on tarpon, with the added attraction of top-notch snook fishing thrown in.

The fishing

Fishing is done from 23’ center console fibreglass boats and, depending on conditions, takes place in either the river itself or just off the coast in the Caribbean. The dry season, from January through May, is considered peak season in the river and lagoons for tarpon as the fish swarm in by the thousands to spawn. Sport continues as late as July and early August on the inside, but in the fall the sea is calm and the fish move to the ocean, providing prime action along the coast.

Snook are also present year round in the waters of the Rio Colorado Lodge, and are taken casting, trolling, surf fishing and even on flies. Light tackle gamesters including guapote, mojarra, machaca, and drum are taken in the rivers, creeks and estuaries so don’t forget a light bait-casting or spinning outfit.

The facilities

The 18 comfortable, air-conditioned rooms have private baths, hot showers, electric fans and daily maid service. Meals are served family style, all you care to eat. There is a comfortable recreation room with game tables, and you’ll find a new video room with satellite TV, telefax equipment, a well-stocked tackle shop and ample outdoor lounging areas, not to mention a small zoo. There’s also a fully-stocked bar with drinks at reasonable prices.

Rates

5 nights/3 days fishing: $1,968 (single occupancy: $2,218)
Standard rate: $495 (single occupancy: $525). Includes lodging, meals, 8 hours’ fishing & happy hour
Non-fishing guests: $120 per day
