The fishing

Thanks to its remote location, the bonefish around Ragged Island are some of the least-pressured you’ll find in the Bahamas. Throw in a handful of permit and plenty of cudas, and you have a near-perfect flats fishery. A plethora of expansive white-sand flats means all the fishing is done by wading – as an added bonus, many of these flats can be reached via a short walk from the lodge, meaning you get to maximise your fishing time.

The guides might not be the most renowned in the Bahamas, but they’re eagle-eyed and keen, and all are well versed in the behavioural patterns and movement of the fish here. All use state-of-the-art Beavertail skiffs, and the lodge also has a 31’ center console for excursions into deeper water in search of tuna, dorado and wahoo.

The facilities

Ragged Island Lodge is comfy and clean, but remember, this is an extremely remote location, so you can expect a few rough edges along the way. That’s all part of the experience.

All rooms are air conditioned, with tile floors and private baths with showers. In the lounge area you’ll find an honesty bar (tabs are settled at the end of your trip), a 52′ flat-screen satellite TV and a fly-tying bench.

Scott Heywood from Angling Destinations who run trips to Ragged Island, says, “If you’re looking for adventure in a pristine environment, this is it! While not for everyone, the lodge offers comfortable, but not luxurious amenities, island fare with an emphasis on seafood and eager, if not polished, guides.”
