Paradise Lodge – Yucatan, Mexico
A small lodge on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, with Chetumal Bay to the south and Espiritu Santo to the north. Completely rebuilt following Hurricane Dean in 2007, the lodge offers first-class sport for bonefish, tarpon, snook and permit – a great place to seek out that super slam. Non-fishermen are welcome.
The fishing
Preparation is considered key at Paradise Lodge: every night, anglers discuss the following day’s fishing with the staff. Want to try for permit in the morning? Rather stick to bonefish and tarpon? Fancy hunting snook in the mangroves? Just tell the lodge manager and he’ll arrange it all.
Coffee goes on at 6am, followed by breakfast cooked to order. Fishing days last 7-8 hours on the water, conditions permitting, and a packed lunch is provided.
The fishing itself is varied – there’s Chetumal Bay (to the south of the lodge) and Espiritu Santo (to the north), providing fishermen with unfathomable areas to explore. It’s one of the best destinations in the world to bag a super slam – a bonefish, tarpon, permit and snook in one day. If you add the ocean waters in the front of the lodge (accessible on calm days) to the two bays and the nearly dozen lakes, there are four distinctly different waters to fish in. In addition to the “glamour species” mentioned above, you’ll also find jacks, barracuda, snapper and others.
The guides are all super-experienced and the boats (all in tip-top condition) are adapted to the local water and fishing conditions.
The facilities
Catering to only six anglers at one time, Paradise Lodge has carved itself a decent reputation as a place where individual attention is the first priority. Meals are expertly prepared, all drinks are on the house and the bar is always open. That’s always welcome news.
The main floor of the building is the great room with dining area, bar and lounge area with comfortable couches and chairs. There are three separate guest rooms directly upstairs from the great room. Each room is furnished with double beds, and comes with air conditioning and overhead fan, a coffee maker, and a refrigerator filled with drinks, water and snacks.
Guest rooms are comfortable with plenty of room for storage and all have private bathrooms with a shower, hot and cold water. Rooms are cleaned daily (there is no laundry service available).
