An intimate fishing lodge located in Punta Allen, specializing in fly-fishing on the flats of Ascension Bay. It’s managed by Dick and Kaye Cameron (former operations managers and hosts of Ascension Bay Bonefish Club). Permit are the No1 target, but bonefish tarpon and more abound here.

The fishing

Given that the lodge acquires its name from the colloquial Spanish term for permit, it should be pretty obvious what the focus here is. That said, this is Ascension Bay so there are plenty of options to keep you interested between shots – plentiful bonefish, tarpon, snook, jack crevalle and barracuda.

The facilities

With its scenic ocean-front setting, The Palometa Club boasts air conditioning, 24-hour power, mosquito control, broadband wireless internet, satellite phone and two fully-outfitted fly-tying stations. The lodge can accommodate 12 guests in six large bedrooms, each with an adjoining bathroom with hot-water shower. The lodge also features a common room, modern kitchen and dining facility, and popular outside beach lounge.

Rates

Weekly rate: $3,500 (based on double occupancy and includes roundtrip transportation from Cancun, room with two beds, all meals, hosted happy hour with drinks and appetizers).

Very much enjoyed the fishing experience. Excellent guides who give you the best opportunities to catch permit. Very good food. David Leake is excellent with setting up the trip.

However, host Dick Cameron was abrasive and offensive with his attitude and comments.

For example, the first night, Dick apparently thought it was a good idea to turn off the generator (which meant no AC or fan after 11pm), and I could hardly sleep through the heat. The next night at dinner, his wife Kay kindly asked if we wanted the AC turned on; and before anyone could respond, I heard Dick tell her to “shut up…I think we can fool them like last night…no one ever died from a little heat at night and electricity costs money…” I thought maybe I didn’t hear him right, but the other guests heard the same thing.

Dick’s commentaries continued: “You gave that kid a Coke?…I hope it was warm…these Mexicans don’t deserve the electricity it costs for a cold soda!”

And it was almost like he couldn’t stop: “Those guys (guests who paid $5000 for the week) can clean up/shower out there on the beach…the hose will be just fine for them!”

I could go on and on, but the bottom line is that we all paid good money (about $8000 total) to be at the Palometa Club. In my humble opinion, we deserved a little more respect and decency by the host.

The guides were incredible, and I was more than happy to give them each over $100 every day for their efforts. However, according to Dick, these tips did not count towards gratuity because his “formula” is based only on the money you give him at the end of the week. When I asked how much money I should give at the end of the week for gratuity, he seemed annoyed and said he would have to get out the calculator. I decided to take the high road and make things easy, so I just gave him an additional $400.

The straw that broke me was the next morning at 7:45 (we were supposed to leave at 8am) when Dick said there was no time for me to take a 2 minute shower. He said “the plan has changed…no shower for you! Get on the bus!”
All I could say was “wow, really?!”

During the ride back, I was somewhat relieved to find out that I was not the only one who was “rubbed the wrong way” by Dick. I just listened, while the other guests made comments like “I really enjoyed the fishing, but that guy really got on my nerves!”

In a more perfect world, the Palometa Club would be available in the absence of its host, Dick Cameron!
