One of the best established and well regarded of Roatan’s fly-fishing lodges, Mango Creek is a small eco resort in Port Royal harbour on the island’s East End. It has four over-the-water cabanas, plus a further two lodge rooms, with space for a maximum of 18 guests at any one time. The fishing program covers both fly and spin fishing for bonefish, tarpon and permit on the nearby flats with experienced English-speaking guides.

The fishing

The fishing at Mango Creek Lodge is headed up by hugely respected local maestro Perry Cooper, ably assisted by his brother Kessel and young protégé Michael Boddon. The lodge has a fleet of pangas, all perfectly suited to fishing the waters around Roatan and beyond.

Fishing in Roatan provides the unique opportunity to wade turtle grass and coral flats, with lush forested mountains as a backdrop. It’s a knockout setting with fishing to match. Bonefish are present in excellent numbers (weighing an average 2-4lb), as are permit, which are mostly in the 5-15lb class. There are also decent quantities of tarpon up to 50lb (peak season being from October to January) in the canal systems. Of course, jacks, cudas, snapper and the occasional snook are also in the mix.

Although most of the fishing is done on the flats of Roatan itself, day trips can also be organised (weather permitting) to the nearby island and famed bonefish hotspot, Guanaja.

Two crucial things to be aware if you’re planning on fishing in Roatan: firstly, be sure to scale back the size of your flies – the water is ultra-skinny and the fish are super-spooky. So bring all the usual bonefish patterns, just make sure they’re no bigger than a size 8 or 6. Secondly, remember that there’s plenty of sub-surface structure in the shape of rocks and coral. Tippet of 15lb or so is advised.

Lodging & facilities

Mango Creek Lodge comprises four over-the-water cabanas, along with two further lodge rooms, allowing for a maximum of 18 guests at any one time. All rooms are traditionally furnished and come with one queen bed, one single bed, private bathroom with hot-water shower and ceiling fans. The main lodge is where it all happens – three meals a day are served here, and it’s a great place to catch up with fellow anglers after a day on the water.
