Reached initially by a 40-minute flight from Havana, this recently-refurbished, luxury 75’ yacht is perfect for a group of six anglers, and an ideal way to explore the waters around Isla de la Juventud (The Isle of Youth). This exceptional live-aboard is utilized by Avalon for exclusive weekly trips to the most remote areas of the Canarreos Archipelago, the chain of islands that runs 80 miles from the Isle of Youth to Cayo Largo.

The fishing

Staying on the Perola provides anglers with a unique Cuban fishing experience. As you explore the flats around The Isle of Youth, you’ll stop off at selected anchorages like Cayo Campo, The Cantilles Islands and finally Cayo Rosario, renowned for some of the best flats fishing in all of Cuba.

All flats species are present in large numbers in this area, including some excellent permit fishing, but it’s as a tarpon fishery that this place has really made its name. The chance of a flats grand slam is a realistic one.

The facilities

There are five air-conditioned cabins below deck, most having their own private bath, with good showers, plenty of hot water and lots of storage space. The polished hardwood floors, teak panelling and circular stairways connecting the cabins with the dining area and open-air deck give this yacht the luxury edge.

The top deck is covered and always remains in the shade, but open to the sea breeze. Several comfortable rope hammocks are hung from the ceiling structure and can be lowered after lunch or dinner for a nap in the breeze. A full-sized, air-conditioned salon on the main deck can be utilized as a living and dining area in extremely harsh weather.

Seafood (either caught by you or harvested by the crew) dominates the menu, but traditional pork and chicken dishes are thrown in for variety. Lobster and conch are abundant can be had on a daily basis from the surrounding waters.

Anglers arriving in Gerona will stay aboard the Perola the first night, anchored at a private marina on the Jucaro River. Early the following morning anglers meet their guides, jump in the skiffs, fishing and running their way east, to meet up with the Perola that evening in one of the selected anchorages. On the final fishing day, anglers will fish their way back to Gerona, re-board the Perola to take a shower and do their final packing, before departing on the evening flight to Havana.
