The fishing

The marine ecosystem around Holbox positively teems with life, and although there’s a long list of species the travelling angler could conceivably target, there’s one principle reason for visiting this quiet corner of the Yucatan: tarpon.

Baby tarpon (anywhere between five and 40lb) are present year round, while the bigger fish (in excess of 100lb) show up between April and September.

Silver kings aside, jacks, cobia, snook and barracuda, grouper and snapper are all present in the waters around Isla Holbox. In terms of tackle, an 8 or 9-weight fly rod is will be perfect for the baby tarpon, but you’ll need something like a 12-weight if you’re planning to take on the bigger fish.

Lodging & facilities

Catering to a maximum of 10 guests at any one time allows Isla Holbox Flyfishing Lodge to retain its focus on high levels of customer care. Lodge staff will pick you up from Cancun airport and transport you (via boat transfer) to the lodge. Transfers from Cancun take roughly a further 2.5 hours.

Days begin with a coffee wake-up call and continental breakfast. Lunch is served on the boats and all other meals are taken at the restaurants in the town (a 5-minute walk away).

The town itself is small and largely free of development – the streets are made of soft sand and there are no cars (although the lodge has a golf cart for exploring the island). Other amenities at the lodge include an open cerveza bar, rod racks and wash-down statio, complimentary happy hour and Cuban cigars, a fly tying bench, signature happy hour hors d’oeuvres. Wireless internet is available at a nearby internet cafe.
