The fishing

An excellent crew of local guides have been hand-picked to cater to anglers’ needs at Grand Slam. All have a minimum of 15 years’ experience, speak good English and know the area intimately.

The fishery itself is hugely diverse, with the obvious favourites bonefish, permit and tarpon present alongside snook, barracuda, sharks, jacks, snapper and more. Every day should bring fresh challenges, and your guide will work hard to ensure that it does. Of course, many people pitch up here for the permit fishing and it’s not hard to see why – it’s some of the finest in the world, with schools of fish in the 3-12lb range resident in the estuary, and fish in the 16-20lb bracket frequently encountered too. Of course, encountering them is one thing, catching them is another. But we all know about that…

The facilities

The brand spanking new Grand Slam Fly Fishing Lodge boasts some world-class facilities. The entire operation features 24-hour electricity and hot water, and all rooms include king-sized beds, a flat screen television with satellite service and DVD player, an iPod docking station and a mini-bar.

The lodge has six beachfront villas, each with two separate rooms featuring contemporary interiors. The ground floor unit has two king-sized beds, an ocean-view Jacuzzi, and a wrap-around deck with lounge chairs and a hammock. The second level bedroom has one king-sized bed, a living area, and a balcony with a hammock. Lockable personal rod racks, a safe for valuables and daily housekeeping service round off the list of amenities.

The main lodge features a social area, bar and Kai Restaurant with an air-conditioned dining room and covered beachfront deck, a library, computer and fly-tying station. At the shop you can buy Cuban cigars, fishing supplies and more.

As soon we got home we started planning our trip back. Even if you weren’t fishing, you’d enjoy staying here. We were fishing though, and the standard of sport was knockout! Bonefish, permit, tarpon (sadly not all on the same day) and plenty of jacks and cudas knocking about to keep things interesting too. Love. This. Place.
