A beachfront development on the island of Guanaja in Honduras, Graham’s Place comprises a selection of villas and suites, plus a 16-room hotel. Permit and bonefish are regular visitors to the pristine flats right outside the lodge – excellent guides are available for hire locally, but experienced bonefishermen will be happy to go it alone; this is DIY bonefishing heaven.

The fishing

Predominantly a bonefish and permit destination, the flats around Guanaja provide excellent, productive sport. The majority of the bones you’ll find will be in the 2-4lb range, with 5lb+ fish showing up pretty regularly too. Equally, permit are present in good numbers, with fish around the 10lb mark most common and specimens up to 20lb not unrealistic.

One of the best things about fishing the flats around Graham’s Place is its potential as a DIY bonefishing destination. As with anywhere, we’d certainly recommend hiring a guide for at least one of your days, but this is truly a place where you can step out of your hotel room, straight onto the flats and be stalking fish within minutes. And if you stop for a drink at the beachfront bar, the folks here recommend keeping your rod rigged and ready – it’s not uncommon to spot fish tailing on the flats as you sit there nursing a beer.

In terms of tackle, a 7- or 8-weight rod with a floating line is perfect. Small flies (gotchas, puffs and charlies for bonefish and small crab patterns for permit) are the order of the day and weed guards are crucial. Guanaja’s flats are, for the most part, rocky and dotted with pieces of fragmented coral, so you’ll need to be mindful of that when tying up/buying flies. For the same reason, don’t be tempted to scale back your tippet too much – 15lb is standard here.

Bonefishing in particular is solid year round, with October-May reckoned to be the more productive months. For permit, peak season is February-July.
